Why Your Support is Critical to the Community
Over the last decade, the South Cumberland Plateau, encompassed by Grundy, Marion, and Franklin counties in Tennessee, has become a place of collaboration and innovation to address challenges for some of its most vulnerable. It is no secret that both access to affordable housing and holistic workforce development have long been a challenge for this area, only exacerbated by historic disinvestment and geographic discrimination.
Neither affordable housing nor construction workforce development is making tremendous strides as indicated by data in subsequent questions in this application. On the positive side, socioeconomic indicators have been improving over the last ten years, showing an increase in the ability of families to enter the housing market and maintain long-term home ownership. Additionally, there is an abundance of construction jobs available locally and nationally.
The Rotary Club of Grundy County, led by President Dr. Michelle Val, is a non-profit service organization dedicated to providing financial and leadership support. The club has joined forces with key local organizations to address two pressing, chronic conditions on the Plateau:
Lack of affordable housing and
Holistic workforce development in the construction trades by building a small footprint home.
The Rotary Club has partnered with the following individuals and organizations to address these issues in the region:
Tim Tucker with Grundy County High School’s Career Technical Education department, specifically Industrial Arts;
Julie Keel with Mountain T.O.P., a housing affordability nonprofit located in Grundy County;
Sarah Brown with Communities In Schools, a school-based nonprofit whose mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life; and
The Housing Hub, a non-profit that brings the vision of a future in which everyone on the South Cumberland Plateau has a safe and affordable place to call home.
